November 21, 2013 – JACOB WISE TRIO
Austin-raised guitarist Jacob Wise’s interest in music was sparked by the blues and rock music that city is famous for. He’s performed with a wide variety of Austin artists, including jazz musicians Paul White, Marc Devine, and Ron Wilkins, vocalists Jenifer Jackson, Sarah Sharp, and many more. He earned his master’s degree at the University of North Texas, where he was a Teaching Fellow, directing the Super 400 guitar ensemble and teaching private lessons. As a member of the renowned One O’Clock Lab Band, he performed with Lyle Mays, Pat Metheny’s keyboardist and collaborator, and John Mosca, the leader of the Village Vanguard Orchestra. His debut album, “Jacob Wise Trio”, which features 9 original compositions, has received positive notices at Allaboutjazz.com and Vintage Guitar Magazine. Jacob will be appearing with WSU faculty Mark Foley on Bass and Steve Hatfield on drums. Mead's Corner, 7-9 pm.
November 21, 2013 – METTA QUINTET
A highly creative unit comprised of some of today’s brightest, emerging jazz artists, METTA QUINTET is dedicated to exploring new artistic territory and the boundaries of the live jazz experience while maintaining a steadfast commitment to serving young audiences and nurturing student musicians. Through the creative integration of live performance, captivating video, lighting and sound design, METTA QUINTET is committed to challenging convention and expanding both audiences and the infinite possibilities of live jazz performance. The Metta Quintet currently features Marcus Strickland (tenor & soprano saxophones), Mark Gross (alto saxophone), Helen Sung (piano), Joshua Ginsburg (bass), Hans Schuman (drums). Events on the 21st include a masterclass by the quintet from 4:00-5:30 pm, and a concert at 7:30 pm. All events take place at Bethel College in Newton, KS.
November 24, 2013 – DOUG WALTER
We kick off our percussion-themed year with Doug Walter with the WSU Faculty Jazz Quintet. Doug has recorded (on drum set and vibes) with Michael Pagàn, the UNT 1:00 Lab Band, the Modest Jazz Trio, the Lawless Jazz ensemble, The CU Jazz Asylum Faculty Quintet, the DAD Trio and the Doug Walter Vibraphone Trio. He is Professor of Percussion at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and is the only marimba and vibraphone artist to have won First Prize in the Concert Artists Guild Competition in NYC. Miller Concert Hall, Wichita State University, 3pm.

April 25, 2014 – Wichita State University Jazz Invitational
Wichita State University is proud to host the annual Jazz Invitational. With renovated facilities, WSU is excited to host the best and brightest of emerging young jazz talent from around the region. Band directors are invited to have their big bands perform for a panel of distinguished judges consisting of invited clinicians, WSU Jazz faculty, and other jazz personalities. Bands also have the opportunity to work directly with clinicians in coaching sessions following their performance. Come out to this free event at WSU, happening all day on Friday!
April 23 – 26, 2014 – 2014 WICHITA JAZZ FESTIVAL
The annual Wichita Jazz Festival will host celebrated jazz artists to be announced very soon. This year's theme is percussion, and we are excited about some very big names in the jazz world who will be joining us!
We are excited to announce that we'll be expanding the educational component of the festival to include more of the area's local talent, and to increase the contact between local players, our guest artists and clinicians, and young jazz musicians from the community and the region.
